Brussel Sprouts with Balsamic Glaze 1

 

This recipe for Brussel sprouts with balsamic glaze is the one I use twice a year for big holiday events (Christmas & Thanksgiving in our house).

Normally I just roast Brussel sprouts with olive oil and garlic, but for major events, I go the extra yard to make the glaze.

Brussel Sprouts with Balsamic Glaze Recipe

Serves 12

Ingredients

  • 1-2 pounds of Brussel sprouts
  • garlic powder
  • salt
  • olive oil
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2-3 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • optional: a pinch of thyme

 


 

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Clean and halve Brussel sprouts.
  3. Toss sprouts in a bowl with enough olive oil to lightly coat them.
  4. Sprinkle garlic powder liberally over the sprouts and continue tossing them to get garlic on all the sprouts.
  5. Prepare a cookie sheet.  I put nonstick foil or parchment paper on the tray to prevent sticking and for ease of cleaning.
  6. Spread Brussel sprouts out over the cookie tray.
  7. Sprinkle salt over all of the sprouts.
  8. Bake 30-35 minutes.
  9. While sprouts bake, prepare the glaze.
  10. Melt the butter in a small pot.
  11. Add the diced onion and saute for 5-10 minutes over medium heat until onions are soft.
  12. Sprinkle a small amount of salt on the onions as they cook
  13. You can add more butter or a dash of olive oil if you need more to cook the onions.  A dash of water can also be used.
  14. Optional: add 1/2 tsp chopped garlic to the onion for the last 1 minute.
  15. Optional: a pinch of dried thyme can be added at this point.
  16. Add balsamic vinegar to the onions and stir over low-medium heat.  Cook for 2-5 mins to thicken a bit.
  17. Put cooked Brussel sprouts in a bowl and toss with the balsamic glaze.
  18. Serve
